a grim irony indeed

My cousin Amy posted a facebook note yesterday that pointed to this article. It contains this quote:

It is the grimmest of ironies that one of the most savage, barbaric acts of evil in history began in one of the most modernized societies of its time, where so many markers of human progress became tools of human depravity: science that can heal, used to kill; education that can enlighten, used to rationalize away basic moral impulses; the bureaucracy that sustains modern life, used as the machinery of mass death, a ruthless, chillingly efficient system where many were responsible for the killing, but few got actual blood on their hands.

President Obama said this April 23, 2009, referring to the Holocaust. What did you think the quote was about?

wow.

Arrived here via Sean Sperte’s blog. Thanks for posting this. Amazing how a person can speak profound truth yet indict himself at the same time.  “Chillingly precise” is absolutely right.

True, but on the other hand, we lack understanding and consistency in regard to really addressing the abortion issue. Obama isn’t the heart of all this (Pastor Wendell Smith has wisely reminded us that we have one enemy no this planet)! And saving the babies isn’t the complete answer.

We want the sanctity of life preserved, but what about the life that would await those unborn children? Seems to me, we are more concerned about them being born than we are about the lives they may live if they are born.

‘Pro-Life’ should extend beyond birth.

Very true mrsDeb. I don’t charge President Obama with any sin, I have no authority to pronounce judgement. He is a man I honor with my words and prayers. But this quotation brings up a concern of mine that people in our nation can so readily overlook abortion.

Conservatively, 15 million of my peers have been aborted. That’s only counting my generation, and in the United States alone. We can’t possibly understand the ramifications of that fact this side of eternity.

But as you pointed out, we can not be ignorant of our true enemy. My ‘Pro-Life’ campaign starts with the lives around me that I encounter day by day, but I also believe that we are supposed to stand on behalf of those who cannot speak for themselves.

Well said. But do you really care about them?

Put yourself into the communities and lifestyles where the majority of those children would’ve been born. Strike that, should have been born.

I hope the world can see that we’re ‘Pro-Life’ by our actions lining up with our words.

I don’t charge the president with sin either.  When I said “indict” himself I mean that he himself has spoken very vividly against the cause of life, but the words he spoke regarding the Holocaust actually indict his previous assertions.

I charge the president with the responsibility we all have which is to choose to advance or not to advance the appreciation for the value of human life in this nation.  And so as the Bible commands believers to pray for our leaders and those in authority, that is what I do.  And as the declaration of independence has given citizens of this country the responsibility to hold their leaders accountable to not usurping government’s authority, and running this country on the principles it was founded, we are called to do that as well.

Much like folks like Margaret Sanger made a choice as to how they would use their influence, President Obama will (and has) too.

We absolutely have one enemy.  But it’s important to note that the battle we fight isn’t against flesh and blood. That enemy works on the earth through people, systems, and schemes to achieve one purpose: steal, kill, and destroy.  We either choose to service God or we choose to serve Satan.  It’s simple as that.

And as I have often written about on my blog, I believe the cause of life is far greater and has far reaching impacts we can’t even conceive of.  For example, the fact that african americans are being effected greater than any other people group is causing negative impacts on our health, and the number of african americans in America.  Or the fact that the result of the millions of abortions that have taken place over the last few decades is that when the baby boomer generation passes on, there are significantly LESS humans on the other to take their place in the workforce.
All consequences of the decisions leaders and legislators WE elected.

I think we’re all agreeing here, and as is understandable, we all have different passions regarding how this issue is to be resolved, but I’m not one of those people who allows leaders to get off easy when they have been tasked and charged with influence.  Even if they are charismatic and likeable. Leaders are called to higher standards. Believers are called to lift up the standard.

mrsDeb, only Jesus knows if I care as I should. I can only boast in Him, and hope to carry His love for all people.

Ambra, I think you’re right. I believe we are in agreement. I posted this link as a reminder so that we don’t fall into the same trap of overlooking this problem as many in the world have.

I’m very thankful to you both for contributing to this post.
